Redcar Tips: Captain Scooby

The going could be testing today; ideal for Captain Scooby who has a tremendous record on soft ground.

The going for the 5.00 Redcar is described as ‘good to soft, soft in places’ but it could be riding slower than the official description. The GoingStick reading is 5.9, which is the third lowest ever recorded at Redcar, over a period of five years.

We therefore need to look for a genuine soft ground horse – like Captain Scooby.

Richard Guest’s 7-year-old has won 8/33 on ground described as ‘good to soft’ or worse and runs consistently well on a slow surface. In 2012, he encountered such ground on seven occasions and recorded Racing Post Ratings of: 79-74-79-82-76-67-51.

His only poor run (RPR=51) came on his last start of 2012 when he’d probably had enough after a long campaign. Today he races in a 0-70 handicap; therefore theoretically five of his last seven soft ground performances were better than this grade. If he runs to form, he should be difficult to beat at 15/2 (BetVictor).
