King George Tips: Sea Moon

Impressive winner at Royal Ascot and his main rivals have questions to answer.

It is no surprise to see Nathaniel, St. Nicholas Abbey and Sea Moon vying for favouritism in the 4.35 Ascot. They all won good races on their last starts, however, two of them look opposable.

Nathaniel returns to the racetrack just 14 days after his victory in the Eclipse and I worry the race took a lot out of him, an issue John Gosden raised after his victory. Speaking to the Racing Post he said, “I’d like to go to the King George but he’s just put in a massive effort having not run since October. You’ve got to be careful as that can take more out of them than it appears.”

My concern with St. Nicholas Abbey is his ability to handle the track; four of his last five defeats have come on a right-handed track. In last year’s King George he finished 4 lengths behind Nathaniel and a repeat of that form won’t be good enough to win this hotter renewal.

By a process of elimination Sea Moon is the selection. He was an impressive winner of the Hardwicke Stakes over course and distance at Royal Ascot, quickening away from a decent field to win by 3.25 lengths.

Having only his ninth start it is fair to assume further improvement, probably enough to give his trainer a sixth win in the race. At 3/1 (Paddy Power) he is the solid betting option plus we get our money back if he finishes second to Nathaniel.
