Great Expectations At Newbury

Great Expectations At Newbury

Infrequent winner but ran well at Chepstow when unfavoured by moderate gallop and earned a good speed rating for the grade.

Great Expectations is an aptly named horse because he promises much but unfortunately delivers little.

In 45 career starts, he has won only twice but his performance last time out was so good I have been tempted in.

The 7-year-old finished second at Chepstow in an odd race. The pack ignored the tearaway leader, who folded tamely, and actually ran the first 3f slower than par.

The race developed into something of a sprint finish, in relative terms, and Great Expectations found himself too far back.

To his credit he ran the fastest closing 3f of the race and earned a speed rating in the low 70s, when you adjust for sectionals.

If he can repeat that performance he should prove competitive in class 5 company, especially if Monarch Maid sets a generous pace. At 6/1 (Bet365) he is overpriced.
