Chelmsford Tips: Compton Poppy

Chelmsford Tips: Compton Poppy

Ran the ninth fastest closing sectional from the last 839 runners at Chepstow. Looks better than a 79 rated horse.

Tony Carroll isn’t renowned for his two-year-olds but he’s got a good one in Compton Poppy who goes in the 5.50 Chelmsford.

Sent off at 100/1 on her first two starts she didn’t set the world alight but there’s been steady improvement. She laboured in soft ground at Bath and although she was beaten the same distance next time at Goodwood it was in a much better race and she earned a bigger speed rating.

It was third time lucky at Chepstow, when a drop to 5f and fast ground brought the best out in her. Travelling strongly for a long way, she scooted clear to win by 2.75 lengths. The time of the race was good but her closing sectional was 0.64s faster than anything else in the field and the ninth fastest at the track from the last 839 runners.

Compton Poppy is potentially a useful sprinter and on my ratings is capable of running to a mark in the 90s, which makes her well handicapped off 79.
