Doncaster Tips: Take Cover

A lightly raced horse who could improve significantly on what he’s achieved to date.

Jack Dexter looks difficult to beat in the 3.10 Doncaster, but considering it is the last turf sprint of the season I’m going to take a flyer on Take Cover at 66/1 (Stan James).

Because this is a listed race not a handicap, Take Cover looks badly treated at the weights. Racing off a mark of 83 he should have no chance against opposition rated in the 100s but low rated horses have done well in this race before.

Doc Hay was only rated 85 when third in this race last year and Russian Spirit won in 2010 off a mark of 85, therefore it can be done.

The exiting thing about Take Cover is that although his rating is comparatively low, he’s only had 5 career starts, winning four times. That makes him a progressive horse and possibly much better than his mark.

When winning at Southwell last year, I was giving him speed ratings that are only five lengths below the standard needed to win a listed contest. His draw is worth at least one of those lengths, he starts from stall 19 and has the advantage of the stand’s rail.

Given his lightly raced profile he should have improved at least a couple of lengths from last winter. He won at Haydock at the end of September, his first start in 10 months, clocking a good time despite a lack of race sharpness.

That leaves him with a two lengths to make up on the field. At 66/1 (Stan James) it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he makes up those missing lengths especially if others under perform after a long hard season.
