Doncaster Tips: Kimberella

Doncaster Tips: Kimberella

Not beaten far at Chester after fluffing the start and runner-up in the Great St. Wilfrid.

The Portland is a fascinating handicap because it is run over the intermediate distance of 5f140y. This unusual trip will suit some horses more than other but looking through the list of past champions there is more of an emphasis on speed.

Seven of the last ten champions were what I’d consider 5f horses and that is where my attention is focused.

Big sprint handicaps used to be the domain of the ‘sprint king’ Dandy Nicholls and although he’s suffered some lean years he’s got a horse to got to war with in the shape of Kimberella.

Last time out at Chester he completely blew the start but did well to finish only 3 lengths behind the winner after making up significant ground from the rear.

He was a head-second in the Great St. Wilfrid and doesn’t look out of place in this big sprint handicaps.

His poor performances at York and Goodwood in the summer were down to fast ground and having won previously at 5f he has the necessary speed to win the Portland at a decent price.
