Doncaster Tips: Almond Branches

Looked a useful prospect when 5-length winner earlier this year. Will love the ground and strong gallop.

The 5.15 Doncaster is another sprint race likely to be affected by the draw bias at the track. High numbers have held sway all year and I would be very surprised if a horse was able to win from a single figure draw.

Drawn in stall 13, but only nine off the rail after Bay Knight’s defection – Almond Branches could run a huge race.

Dropped back to 5f this season, he’s looked a useful horse, winning a class 4 handicap by five lengths in July and backing that up with two 3rd place finishes in good handicaps.

The one black mark against his name was a poor run at the Ebor meeting last month. He did have excuses however, he was racing in the final race of the day and by then the rain had got into the ground.

Best on a sound surface, Almond Branches also needs a strong gallop to aim at, as he can get outpaced in his races. He should get conditions to suit and with Jamie Spencer on board; he has the perfect jockey to execute exaggerated hold-up tactics. At 20/1 (Paddy Power) he is the value in the race.
