Doncaster Portland Tips: Steps
The ground, draw and pace have thwarted Steps at some point this season but this afternoon everything is in his favour.
Connections of Steps must be frustrated to see their horse rise up the handicap without winning but I think there is plenty more to come, especially now there is cut in the ground.
The dry summer has seen him race on surfaces quicker than he’d like, he’s never won on anything faster than good, but he has still performed with credit. He has placed in three of his last four starts and that is despite bad draws at Sandown and Ascot.
Considering Steps has raced in suboptimal conditions, it is to his immense credit that his best Racing Post Ratings have all come this year. Roger Varian is right when he says he is an improved performer and on soft ground, he could be even better.
