Doncaster Horse Racing Tips: Grissom

Ignore his last run in the mud, previous to that he had looked progressive. Well drawn and already a winner at the track.

The 3.45 at Doncaster is a competitive handicap that has taken many hours of analysis but with so many runners there is always value to be found. My first port of call is the going. The official description is good but a Going Stick reading of 8.9 suggests it is riding quicker, it is bordering on good to firm ground.

With unusually fast ground for this time of the year, I can do something I’ve wanted to do for weeks; bin all the form from the Ayr Western meeting. The ground for the three day festival was heavy, with several horses running below par because of it. Unlike the bookmakers I’m happy to ignore that Ayr form completely.

One such horse that finished nowhere in the Ayr Silver Cup was Grissom and he can bounce back at Doncaster today. Before getting stuck in the mud in Scotland, Tim Easterby’s gelding had been on a run of two wins in three races. He took a competitive seven furlong handicap at Doncaster in August before running into the smart Sirius Prospect. He was beaten 4.5 lengths that day but would have finished a great deal closer with a clear run.

With three wins and three second places, this five-year-old has been progressive all season. He also has the bonus of being drawn against the stand’s rail in stall 22. The pace seems to be drawn high and several races have been won by horses sticking to this nearside rail.

At 22/1 with William Hill we can forgive Grissom’s last run and expect a return to his best.
