Ascot Tips: The Sawyer

The Sawyer has been a grand old servant to connections and at 12-year-old his best days are behind him. However, he’s slipped to a handicap mark where he can enjoy one last hurrah in the 3.15 Ascot.

Having spent most of his career in graded races, he sneaks into this class 3 handicap off bottom weight, his mark having fallen 18lbs since the start of last season. Despite his age, he still retains plenty of ability but the key to him is the ground.

Ascot suffered a deluge last night, with 17mm of rain falling on the track. This has changed the going to ‘soft’, ideal conditions for The Sawyer.

Given his age it is no surprise that he runs well fresh. In his last two campaigns his best Racing Post Ratings were achieved on his seasonal debut. After 256 days off the track he makes his reappearance at Ascot this afternoon; with conditions to suit he looks the value at 8/1 (Boylesports).
