Ascot Tips: Stagecoach Pearl

The top three in the betting all have flaws. At long odds this recent winner could upset the big guns.

There are question marks hanging over the leading contenders for the Amlin Chase (2.10 at Ascot). Master Minded was poor on his seasonal reappearance at Aintree and I have the suspicion he is better with ease in the ground. Four of his six UK defeats have come on ground rated good.

Medermit and Somersby are big dangers but the trainers of both horses have hinted that their future lies over further. Indeed both have mooted the King George as a possible target.

Next in the betting is Kalahari King and his quote of 8/1 looks frankly ridiculous considering he was beaten 37 lengths by Stagecoach Pearl. At 25/1 Sue Smith’s seven-year-old must be the value bet in the race.

Two weeks ago Stagecoach Pearl showed great determination to make all and win a useful looking handicap at Kelso. On the whole his jumping was good and if he is given an easy time out front he could steal the race. Although he is rated 26lbs below Master Minded he did achieve one of his best ever Topspeed ratings last time out, emphasising what great heart he is in. The 25/1 quote by Ladbrokes is too big considering none of the main protagonists are screaming to be backed.
