Ascot Tip: Imperial Guest

Won his side of the race last year and better drawn this time round.

The International Stakes at 3.50 is the big handicap of the day at Ascot. Run over seven furlongs it has the usual faces who have contested the Victoria Cup and Buckingham Palace Stakes this season.

Imperial Guest is a familiar presence in the big handicaps at Ascot and can score a deserved win. Successful over six furlongs in May, he then disappointed when backed for the Wokingham. Although he was hampered I’ve come to the conclusion that a sprint trip is too sharp for him nowadays. Seven furlongs on slower ground is much more his conditions.

His record over seven furlongs at Ascot is very good. His last three finishes in the aforementioned races are: 373. That seventh place was in last year’s International Stakes. Forced to race on the far side from stall one, he still managed to ‘win’ his race on the wrong side.

The draw has been kinder this year, with stall 21 and good position as the pace is all around him. He will need a bit of luck in running, but should give a good account of himself.
