The Golf Outsider: Wyndham Championship

A new feature highlighting the long shots who are better than their odds.

In a new feature, we have enlisted the help of a semi-pro golf punter who has a unique way of betting. Using Betfair our ‘Golf Outsider’ focuses on players at very long odds. His theory is that markets overreact to a run of birdies, therefore even a seeming no-hoper can get in contention during a tournament and see his odds contract.

Each week he will highlight players on the PGA and European Tour to look out for at long odds. Either to back and trade, or to let them run.

Wyndham Championship

The tournament formerly known as the Greenbrier Classic was played at Forest Oaks Country Club until 2007, it is now played at Sedgefield Country Club. The change of venue does not seem to have changed the form, with players such as Brandt Snedeker managing good finishes on both of these courses.

One player who looks similar to Snedeker in terms of “tournament form” is Jason Bohn. Although his recent form is not great he surely has to be chanced at 179/1. With a T3 and 2nd on the old course, he followed that up with a T2 on the new course in 2009. It is obvious he loves the tournament and feels at home playing in the area. A recent T30 at the John Deere shows he is not completely out of sorts and the price is certainly big enough.

Recommend Bet:  Jason Bohn @ 180.0

Jim Renner has finished in the top five twice in his last four tournaments, including the birdie fest that was the Viking Classic. It will be a similar type of event this week so 400/1+ on a man in form who loves birdies seems good business. He is a first timer in the tournament but so was winner Arjun Atwal last year. I don’t think this is a reason to be put off.

Recommend Bet:  Jim Renner @ 410.0

Shane Bertsch is on a good run of form with 6 from 7 cuts made, a T18 on his last start in Reno, and T9 at the Viking Classic a few weeks before that. He also has a sneaky bit of tournament form, T9 here in 2008. The price of 400/1+ looks generous.

Recommend Bet:  Shane Bertsch @ 430.0
