US Open Tips: Brandt Snedeker

Has the ideal game for Merion where the onus is on accuracy rather than length. Has four top-25s finishes in his last five US Opens.

In the last couple of seasons, Brandt Snedeker has stepped up his game to become one of the world’s best and despite injury concerns, I expect him to go well at the US Open.

The world number seven, strained muscles in his rib cage on the way to victory at Pebble Beach earlier this season, it sidelined him for a month but ongoing treatment seems to be keeping the problem in check.

Since that layoff, he has finished T6 at the Masters and T8 at the Players so it’s not affected his results too badly.

What really excites me about his chances this week is Merion – it is tailor made for him. Measuring less than 7,000 yards, it isn’t too long, with the onus instead on accuracy and short game, elements that Snedeker excels at.

A tough setup will not hold any fears for the 32-year-old as he’s played well at the US Open before. In his last fives attempts he has finished: T23-T9-MC-T8-T11.

Many punters will be put off by the fact he arrives at Merion on the back of two missed cuts, but his T6 at Augusta came after a similar dip in form.

Overall, his play this year has been excellent and on a course that suits his game, he looks a solid each-way bet at 33/1 (Stan James) with ¼ odds for a top-6 finish.
