Greenbrier Classic Golf Tips: Roberto Castro

Putting was much improved at the AT&T National and ranks 12th on tour for ball striking.

Nationwide Tour graduate Roberto Castro is one of my favourite outsiders; this is the third time I’ve tipped him, because his results far outstrip his price.

He has made 12 out of 16 cuts this year and has only missed one since April, which was excusable as it was the US Open. The experience gained by consistently reaching the weekend of tournaments has seen him improve almost week by week.

Last Sunday he was one of only 14 players to shoot under-par in the final round of the AT&T National. If he can continue that form, he should go well at the Greenbrier Classic. The 26-year-old certainly has the game to thrive at the Old White TPC. He ranks 10th for total driving, 26th for GIRs and 12th for ball striking.

The one weakness in his game is his putting. He ranks 113th for strokes gained putting and doesn’t take enough of the opportunities he creates. On a positive note he won’t need to make a tonne of birdies at the Greenbrier; last year’s winning score of 10-under is likely to be competitive again.

The AT&T National was also his best performance with the flat stick all year and if he can carry that confidence over he could do some damage at 200/1 (Betfred). Back him each-way with ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
