Golf Outsider: Scottish Open 2012

Our longshots expert has four players to look out for at this week’s Scottish Open, including a player at 999/1!

Last week on the PGA Tour three 500/1 shots finished in the top-5; if that hasn’t converted you to the idea of backing outsiders then I guess nothing will! My focus turns to the Scottish Open and with many of the top players distracted by the Open Championship, this could open the door for another big price winner.

Scottish Open Selections

Soren Kjeldsen has shown he can go well in back-to-back tournaments this year, his 5th place in Dubai swiftly followed by a 3rd on the Sicilian coast. He was 9th last week at the Open de France and plays another coastal track in Castle Stuart this week - hopefully a good omen.
Recommended Bet: Soren Kjeldsen at 130.0 (Betfair)

Raphael Cabrera-Bello has a win, and three top-5 finishes this season, one of them just a few weeks ago at Royal Portrush. The only downside is a missed cut here last year, but that was during a terrible patch of form. He has been a different player since his second at the Portugal Masters in October.
Recommended Bet: Raphael Cabrera-Bello at 80.0 (Betfair)

Let us get back to basics now and tip one of my favourite players - Bernd Wiesberger. He has been noticeably absent from this column since his win back in April but a series of indifferent performances has seen his price drift to 290.0 and it’s time to get involved again. He has shown form in Scotland with a second place at Gleneagles, and now a proven winner he is definitely worth the risk.
Recommended Bet: Bernd Wiesberger at 290.0 (Betfair)

Not wanting to be outdone by Betting Bias’s 750/1 PGA Tour selection, I have gone for Simon Thornton at even bigger odds! There is obviously not a great deal to go on but he was 11th at the coastal Madeira track just last month and followed that with a decent 33rd at Royal Portrush. He also has some reasonable form in Scotland with 26th & 38th place finishes at Gleneagles. He is worth a small investment hoping to hit the jackpot.
Recommended Bet: Simon Thornton at 1000.0 (Betfair)
