Puerto Rico Open Tips 2013: Justin Leonard

Made five out of six cuts this year and if the wind blows at this coastal resort his chances will improve.

The Puerto Rico Open might feel like the poor relation on tour this week but it is an excellent opportunity to find a big price winner. The bookmakers go 20/1 the field and it is the sort of tournament that anyone could win.

It is almost five years since Justin Leonard won on tour but Michael Bradley and Greg Kraft both won this event well into their 40s proving that age isn’t a barrier.

So far this season Leonard has looked in decent shape, he’s made five out of six cuts and although he’s not had a top-25 finish, this is the weakest field he’s competed in.

The weather forecast this week is mixed and if the wind gets up, Leonard’s chances will increase. He won the 1997 Open Championship and was runner-up in 1999 at Carnoustie in dreadful conditions; a coastal breeze therefore shouldn’t faze him.

A 12-time winner on tour, experience might give the 40-year-old the edge against modest opposition. At 125/1 (Coral) he is worth an each-way punt with ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
