Puerto Rico Open Tip 2013: Will Claxton

His best results have come by the sea with a T9 in Mexico and T23 in Hawaii.

Having already discussed how important it is to play the par-3s well, the other ingredient for success in Puerto Rico is GIRs. Last year’s top five ranked: 1, 2, T5, T7 and 10 for GIRs over the four days’ play.

The paspalum greens are difficult to read and to win the tournament you need to give yourself as many looks at putts as possible. Ranked 55th on tour for GIRs, the course should set up perfectly for Will Claxton.

Two weeks ago Claxton was the first round leader at the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico, a similar seaside resort course. He also finished T23 at the Sony Open in Hawaii suggesting he has an affinity for windy courses by the sea.

Another golfer enjoying his first season on the PGA Tour, he isn’t scarred by the constant failure that might afflict a journeyman pro. At 150/1 (bodog) he has a better chance than his odds; back him each way and get ¼ odds for a top-six finish.
