The Golf Outsider: Portugal Masters 2011

The European Tour stays in the Iberian Peninsula this week as a good field heads to Vilamoura for the Portugal Masters. The Victoria Course at the Oceanico resort has been used for the last four years, so I’ll try a mixture of some course stalwarts along with the usual huge priced newcomers.

Portugal Masters Selections

Robert-Jan Dersksen falls into the former category, having finished in the top 20 in each of the last four years. He put in a good performance in his home fixture at the KLM Open (12th) and played solid golf last week at the Madrid Masters, finishing 30th.

Recommended Bet: Robert-Jan Dersksen @ 140.0

Gary Boyd has only played here once but finished a creditable T9, shooting all four rounds in the 60s. He will be eyeing an even better finish second time round. He missed the cut on his last start, but that can be forgiven. There are plenty of other good finishes in the bag this season, including his best of T2 at the Italian Open, which also came after a missed cut. He is 66th on the Race to Dubai so a coveted top 60 spot is within reach with a good finish. He has plenty to play for as the season draws to a close.

Tom Lewis has obviously never played here before but anything in three figures at this point for the recently turned professional just looks great business. He is a great talent and will be desperate to secure his card for next season.

Daniel Gaunt is the wildcard pick this week. He has flirted with the top of the leaderboard on a few occasions but always seems to blow up on too many holes. There is no denying he is a talented player, and with a recent T21 at the Austrian Open the signs are he could be on the verge of a big performance.
