The Golf Outsider: Portugal Masters

Our long shots expert has three selections for the European Tour event in Portugal.

The European Tour heads to Vilamoura for the Portugal Masters this week. The Victoria Course at the Oceanico resort has been used for the last five years, so I’ll try a mixture of course stalwarts along with the usual huge priced newcomers. It’s a tactic that served us well last year, after we highlighted Tom Lewis, the eventual winner, at 160.0.

Portugal Masters Selections

Tom Lewis shot to fame in this event last year and I’m hoping the prodigiously talented Kristoffer Broberg can follow in his footsteps. In August, the 26-year-old Swede became the fastest player in Challenge Tour history to earn three victories and instant promotion to the European Tour. His ascent is even more remarkable when you consider he has only played five Challenge Tour events this season. A star in the making.
Recommended Bet: Kristoffer Broberg at 180.0 (Betfair)

For my second long shot, I’m using a completely different approach and focusing on course form. Peter Lawrie has played 302 events on the European Tour but this tournament still brings the best out of him; his record in Vilamoura is: 16-23-37-6-11. The Irishman’s recent form is nothing spectacular but he is always worth a second look at one of his favourite venues.
Recommended Bet: Peter Lawrie at 180.0 (Betfair)

Gregory Havret has endured a disappointing season, languishing 92nd in the Race to Dubai. Last year he arrived in Portugal on the back of a similar poor run but managed to finish third. Another revival isn’t out of the question for this three-time winner on tour.
Recommended Bet: Gregory Havret at 110.0 (Betfair)
