Frys.com Open Golf Tips: Jim Herman
Big hitter who is starting to warm up with the flat stick. Worth the risk at huge odds.
My final pick for the Frys.com Open is a bit of leftfield choice; Jim Herman at 300/1 with Bet365. A winner on the Nationwide Tour, Herman is having his first season on the main circuit. Lying 188th on the money list, he is struggling to keep his card and like many professionals, is using the Fall series to keep his playing privileges.
Two top-25s in 19 events is distinctly underwhelming but he is better than the bare results. An excellent driver of the ball, ranking 11th on tour for distance, he crucially backs that up with solid iron play; he is 37th for GIRs.
Recent form has also been showing signs of improvement. In his last four tournaments he has finished T61-T25-T59-MC, with a second round 64 at the Wyndham a particular highlight.
At this level it is the flat stick that lets him down. Ranked 153rd for strokes gained putting speaks volumes. What it neglects to mention is that three tournaments ago he ranked T8 for putting. He has the elements to finish well, it is a case of bringing it all together.
At 300/1 (Bet365) it is worth taking a chance that it all clicks this week in California. Back him each way for ¼ odds for a top five finish.
