Frys.com Open Golf Tips: Brandt Jobe

Gets the Jobe done

Ranks 2nd for total driving and 17th for GIRs on tour. A ninth place finish at the BMW shows he has form to back up the stats.

After five horrible years it would mark a great comeback if Brandt Jobe could win the Frys.com Open. Late in 2006, a domestic accident saw him sever the tip of his left index finger and bottom of his left thumb. Surgery reattached the finger and thumb but it left him with limited feeling in both. For a golfer this could have ended his career.

It took him almost five years to remodel his swing and grip to ease the pain in his fingers, but this season he is reaping the rewards. Having slumped to number 562 in the world, he is back up to 113th, with his card assured for next season. Eight top-25s this season prove he is more than a sentimental bet; this is a talented golfer having a good season.

In his last tournament, the BMW Championship, Brandt Jobe finished ninth, recovering well from an opening round of 75. An excellent driver of the ball, he hits it long and straight, ranking 2nd for total driving on the PGA Tour. With such excellence off the tee, it is no surprise that he ranks 17th for GIRs.

More than anyone this week, Jobe will have opportunities to get close to the pin with his approach shots. If he can get the putter working well then 40/1 (William Hill) will seem big come Sunday night. Back him each way for ¼ odds for a top five finish.
