The Golf Outsider: Deutsche Bank

Rose on form

We highlight the outsiders with a chance better than their odds. This week the PGA Tour goes to Boston.

There is plenty of course form for the Deutsche Bank Championship, having been played at the TPC Boston since 2003. It sounds strange but Vijay Singh is probably once again the man to beat. He burst back into form recently and has a great record on the course. The two-time winner doesn’t qualify as an ‘outsider’ at 33/1, so let’s look at some bigger prices.

Deutsche Bank Selections:

Justin Rose looks like good value at nearly double the price of Singh. He has a 3rd and a 4th place finish at the course and is coming off a T6 at the Barclays. He looks overpriced considering he is a multiple PGA Tour winner.

Recommend Bet: Justin Rose @ 75.0

Like Singh, Jerry Kelly is another ‘golden oldie’ enjoying a renaissance. Reeling off finishes of T24-T4-T26-T34 in his last four starts. His form at this tournament was poor until 2009 when he fired in a T11. That is good enough to make it my second bet.

Carl Pettersson is putting together a good late season charge; he has made 6 cuts from 7 events, finishing no lower than T34. This included a T8 and a T4. He has some patchy form in Boston but it includes a T4 and T11 and therefore looks poised to defy huge odds.

Recommend Bet: Carl Pettersson @ 210.0

Finally I’ll go with another veteran in Scott Verplank. He was 2nd here two years ago and has shown flashes of that sort of excellence with a T4 at the PGA Championship.

Recommend Bet: Scott Verplank @ 230.0
