BMW PGA Championship Tips: Retief Goosen

Excellent record at the course with five top-20 finishes in the last 7 years. Worth chancing his fitness given the odds.

After struggling with a back injury for the last 18 months, I am taking a chance tipping Retief Goosen, but at 80/1 (Bodog) we are amply reward for the risk.

Having taken most of April off to undergo treatment, the former US Open Champion showed signs of a revival in the Volvo Match Play last week. He reached the quarter-finals, beating eventual winner Nicolas Colsaerts along the way. The most encouraging aspect was he lasted the equivalent of four rounds of golf. His back problems can’t be cured but it was a positive sign.

Making his 19th appearance at Wentworth, Goosen will feel like he is returning home; almost literally in his case as he owns a house in the area. Since 2004, he has finished inside the top-20 in 5 of his last 7 visits; even the course modifications don’t seem to have affected him.

Any distance he has lost off the tee should not hamper him, as the tree-lined West Course is all about accuracy. If the back holds up then he could be a steal at 80/1 (Bodog) with ¼ odds for a top-6 finish.
