Monaco Grand Prix Betting

Alonso has set the early pace.

Vettel is running away with the Championship. But the German has never won in Monte Carlo.

Fernando Alonso has caused a stir in the Monte Carlo betting market with a fine display in practice that saw his Ferrari lead the way. It was a stark reminder that this is a track that the Spaniard thrives upon. The former two-time world champion has been cut by a number of bookies but Betfred are holding their ground, offering 6/1 on an Alonso win on Sunday.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel made a sluggish start, trailing back in fifth spot. Red Bull fans perhaps shouldn’t be too perturbed, with the German frequently holding his best back for final qualifying and race day. Vettel has been slightly eased out to 5/4 with Bluesquare to win the race; 5/6 with the same firm to claim pole again. The bookies are generally unphased by the reigning champion’s failure to ever win the famous street circuit.

Lewis Hamilton was second in practice, just 0.105 seconds behind the Spaniard. The bookies still see the 2008 Drivers’ Champion as a greater threat in the race itself. Betfred make him 7/1 to bag pole, but just 4/1 that he is first to the checkered flag on Sunday. McLaren team-mate Jenson Button is again just off the pace of his fellow countryman. Button is a distant 28/1 with bet365 to top final qualifying, but 14/1 to re-ignite his title bid with a victory.

Last year’s pole-to-flag winner in Monaco was Mark Webber, but technical problems saw him trail in a distant eighth in practice this time. The Australian, who also pipped team-mate Vettel to pole in Barcelona recently, is 5/1 with bet365 to repeat that feat here. The second Red Bull is 6/1 to make it two wins in a row down by the Italian Riviera, according to SkyBet.
