2014 Drivers’ Championship Tip: Lewis Hamilton

Mercedes have been quick in testing and Hamilton has the edge over his teammate.

The Formula 1 season gets underway in the early hours of Sunday morning and the extensive rule changes have shuffled the pack.

Red Bull endured a miserable winter, with their car spending most of pre-season in the pits. They managed just 20 consecutive laps and reliability is a real concern for the team.

Mercedes have enjoyed a trouble free winter, with their car looking both reliable and quick. Pre-season lap times are akin to fool’s gold but it doesn’t take a leap of faith to expect the German outfit to be contenders in 2014.

Mercedes finished second in the constructors championship last season and with Red Bull struggling they are rightly 10/11 (William Hill) to win team honours.

If the ‘silver arrow’ is indeed the best car then it looks a straight shootout between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg for the drivers’ championship.

At 9/4 (Betfred) the British driver is a safer bet. He’s won 22 races during his F1 career compared to Rosberg’s three and that experience should give him the edge.
