Alonso Upsets Established Order

Alonso Scores First win in 2011

Fernando Alonso caused a surprise by beating both Red Bulls and winning the British Grand Prix.

Ferrari scored their first win of the season at Silverstone, making Fernando Alonso now clear second favourite for the drivers’ championship. The Spaniard overhauled Sebastian Vettel after a slow pit stop from Red Bull, but showed enough pace all race to think he would have won anyway.

With significant upgrades to the car, the Ferrari driver looks like the main challenger for the title. He has been cut to 14/1 from 25s.

World champion Vettel still managed to extend his lead in the standings to 80 points over Mark Webber. The most significant incident happened on the team radio - the Australian was ordered to keep the gap behind his teammate. The implications are that the German is number one driver at Red Bull. Webber is out to 50/1 for the world championship.

Despite an excellent drive from Lewis Hamilton, the best he could finish was fourth. His most realistic hope is winning the ‘without Vettel’ market, where he is 7/2. Webber and Alonso are joint 7/4 favourites in that category.
