Italian GP Preview

Fernando Alonso will be keen to give the home fans something to cheer about. We look at the trends of past Italian GP winners.

Jenson Button kept his slim championship hopes alive with victory in Belgium and is now 25/1 (Betfred) for the title having been 66/1 just a week ago. Ferrari have won their home grand prix 19 times, and are 11/2 (Betfred) to increase that tally on Sunday.

Value of pole position
Pole position has proven immensely valuable in recent years. Four of the last five race winners started on pole, with Rubens Barrichello the exception in 2009.  The Brazilian was heavily fuelled in qualifying, compromising his grid position but allowing him to execute a one-stop strategy.

Driver to watch
Bruno Senna scored his first world championship point at Monza with a ninth placed finish last year; three places higher than anything else he achieved in 2011.

Retirement Rate –Below Average
In the last five years, Monza on average has the fifth highest number of finishers of all the circuits on the F1 calendar. The 2011 edition was particularly attritional with only 15 classified drivers but that was an exception to the norm.
