Wigan v Liverpool Tips

Martinez's side are on good form

Roberto Martinez has one of the most spirited sides in the top flight. Giving their all till the final whistle is reaping rewards.

This game is looking a far more fascinating contest than it would have a few weeks ago when Wigan were pretty woeful. Roberto Martinez’s side have rediscovered the wonderful spirit that kept them in the division at the end of last season, and Liverpool won’t relish this pre-Christmas trip to the DW Stadium.

After the Latics snatched a merited equaliser against Chelsea on Saturday I’ve been tempted to favour another draw in this one at 3/1 (Boyelsports). But instead I’m backing a tip that can come in win, lose or draw. Wigan are finishing games really strongly at the moment, and at 11/4 (Bet365) I like the look of them to be the final team to score in the match. Perhaps it will be a late consolation goal, or perhaps it will be far more meaningful; either way we can profit.

Jordi Gomez’s crucial strike against the Blues came in the 88th minute at the weekend. He also scored the only goal of the second period in the 2-1 win the week before at WBA. The away win before that came courtesy of a 93rd minute strike from Di Santo at Sunderland. Wigan’s never-say-die attitude is picking up valuable points at the moment.

For their part, Liverpool have only scored one second half goal in their last four league outings - and that came in the 47th minute. Results have been pretty good but they aren’t finishing games particularly strongly. The defeat at Fulham at the start of the month came courtesy of a Clint Dempsey winner in the 85th minute at Craven Cottage. The Reds may not lose this one, but Wigan are tantalisingly long odds to strike last in Wednesday’s televised encounter.
