There are plenty of statistics flying around ahead of Sunday’s Wear-Tyne derby but one stands out for me. According to Opta, Sunderland have had fewer shots on goal (27) than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues this season. When you consider the personal form of Steven Fletcher, that ought to be a huge concern for Martin O’Neill.

Not only is history on their side but the team news is also looking very promising for Alan Pardew. The defensive triumverate of Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul may all be set for a return; even one or two of those big names returning would be a huge boost.
Furthermore, if the visitors need some inspiration off the bench then they can always call upon Shola Ameobi. The 6ft 3in striker revels in the derby atmosphere with a remarkable seven goals in his last seven appearances against the Mackems.
