Austin In The Fast Lane
Look beyond the bare numbers and the Premier League’s leading English marksman is there on merit.
After his hat-trick against West Brom, Charlie Austin is the talk of the town. Reports suggest he is in line for a lucrative new contract, whilst manager Harry Redknapp thinks he should expect a call from his country.
It has been some journey for a striker who was playing non-league football only five years ago.
Having featured in only 15 Premier League matches in his entire career it might be premature to bestow any further accolades on Austin but his underlying numbers are encouraging.

Austin’s scoring rate is fuelled by a high number of shots and although his rate of 0.77 goals per90 is above his expected goals rate (ExpG 90), he deserves his place amongst the league’s leading strikers.
The 25-year-old is registering numbers that are comparable with Graziano Pelle and Diego Costa despite his team languishing near the foot of the table.
Austin’s goals per90 might cool in the short term but come the end of the season he should remain near the top of the scoring charts.
