It’s hard to imagine that Alan Pardew wouldn’t be a lot more popular on Tyneside if he had at some point enjoyed a vintage derby day victory at St James’s Park. Instead, his home record is little short of catastrophic (W0 D1 L2) with the last two clashes ending in spectacular 3-0 scorelines for Sunderland.
So it therefore stands to reason that Gus Poyet is idolised on Wearside for his part in the Black Cats’ recent glory. He pulled off the double last term and his troops have enough about them to repeat the trick on Sunday at a best price of 3/1.
The Mackems are struggling to convert draws (10) into success but they are competitive week in, week out. That wasn’t the case last week for Pardew’s streaky mob who have suddenly lost 4-1 and 4-0 on consecutive trips to London.
The Toon Army have every reason to think things are going awry again and Sunday might just confirm this.
