Liverpool For Relegation?

Could Liverpool really go down?

Another managerial sacking, more defeats - people are starting to ask the unthinkable.

The departure of Roy Hodgson after only seven months and a second defeat of the season to Blackpool has convinced an ever-increasing number that anything is now possible for Liverpool. Anything, that is, in terms of plumbing new depths. The unthinkable notion of relegation is now being discussed with a straight face.

Totesport are now offering just 16/1 on the Merseysiders playing Championship football next season. Incredible when talking about the 18 times league champions who haven’t been relegated since 1954. They haven’t even finished outside the top 8 since they returned to the top flight. So how likely is it that they’ll be languishing in the bottom three come May?

Reds’ legend Kenny Dalglish has been charged with the task of turning the club’s fortunes around, at least in the short term. The backing of the fans will be there without question, something that could never be said of the Hodgson regime. This is the big positive of this move. The downside is that Dalglish has been out of management for over a decade and his spells at Newcastle and Celtic were hardly unqualified successes as it was. It’s been 20 years since he reigned at Anfield and there will be those who say that the game’s moved on and that King Kenny will be out of touch.

For those who see things only getting worse, Boylesports provide the value with Liverpool currently offered at 25/1 for relegation. It’s likely, however, that the current interest in this market has been largely fuelled by the wishful thinking of many Evertonians. Expect this trend to get really out of hand if the blue half of Merseyside emerge victorious in the big derby on Sunday.
