Chelsea v Genk

Torres has two in two in the league

Suspended domestically, AVB will be keen to give the Spaniard every chance to shine in Europe.

Chelsea are red-hot favourites to beat the Belgian champions but at best odds of 1/8 there surely won’t be many takers. Genk are yet to score in the Champions League and back in their domestic league they have only collected half the number of points they were on at this stage last year. Clearly success is taking its toll on the underdogs and a host of defensive injuries is the last thing manager Mario Been needs as he heads to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have hit the ground running in Europe and they would have maximum points had they not conceded a late penalty in Valencia. No matter, Chelsea have so far matched Barcelona and Real Madrid with 19 attempts on goal already in this season’s competition; having hit the target 68% of the time they also rank as the most accurate. There only looks to be one winner in this contest, so the real task is finding some value.

The first goalscorer market can be a minefield when team selection is often uncertain for the matches, but on this occasion Fernando Torres looks like a shrewd punt. Currently serving a three match domestic ban, the £50m man is a near-certainty to start this Group E game.

Andre Villas-Boas knows that the Spaniard could still do with any confidence boost he can get, and Wednesday night represents a great opportunity to get amongst the goals. Not that the 27-year-old is struggling quite as much as you might think. He has actually scored in both of his last two league outings and has shown plenty of hunger. At best odds of 3/1 with Coral, Torres could be fast out of the blocks against Genk.
