Reasons for hope:
For most fans, Jose Mourinho is the short answer to that. The ‘Special One’ is back at the helm and the most successful manager in the club’s history has as good a squad at his disposal as anyone. Andre Schurrle is the only significant arrival on the pitch and the former Leverkusen star will add yet more craft to the Londoners.

Reasons to worry:
They say you should never go back. Can Abramovich really keep all the old problems he had with Jose in the past, or will he get trigger-happy yet again? Then there is the Torres problem. The £50m misfit starts as the main striker at the club again and it’s doubtful he can repay the faith shown in him.

Verdict:
The departure of top managers at both Manchester clubs makes the return of Mourinho look like inspired timing. Potential champions.
