Bayern Munich v Arsenal Tip

Wenger's determination to 'go for it' in Germany should ensure a lively second leg if nothing else.

What happens when an Arsene Wenger team goes for all-out attack against one of the top sides on the continent? We will find out on Wednesday evening, but the chances of a 0-0 draw must be extremely slim. More likely, there will be over 3.5 goals in the match - a 6/4 shot with StanJames.

Trailing 3-1, the Gunners boss is quoted as saying: “We have to have a real go without being silly…We have to create doubt in their mind and you only do that by starting really strong.” Wenger is the sort of man who will still think his team can pull off ‘mission impossible’ and we shouldn’t doubt his intentions to pile forward. The problem is that this could be a suicidal approach.

Bayern are the top scorers in this season’s competition with 18 goals from seven matches. There have been 15 goals in their three Champions League matches at the Allianz Arena (opponents have scored 3 of those) so we only need that sequence to continue to make money.

My assumption is that so long as the tie remains vaguely in the balance, Arsenal will adopt an increasingly daredevil formation that will almost guarantee goals at one end or the other. Wenger probably wouldn’t throw in the towel unless his side go at least 2-0 down on the night. In that scenario, even if he then attempts to tighten up, we are already half way to a winning wager anyway.

On the other hand, If things start well for the Londoners then the prospect of a high-scoring encounter seems even greater. In other words, most ways you see this playing out involves a few goals.
