Federer Expresses Delight

Federer defended his title in London

Written off as he slipped down to fourth in the world rankings, arguably the best tennis player the world has ever seen is a force to be reckoned with again.

Former world number one Roger Federer showed that there’s life in the old dog yet as he edged out Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 to claim the ATP World Tour Finals. The 16-time Grand Slam champion described the victory as “one of his greatest accomplishments” after securing a record-breaking sixth season-ending crown at London’s O2 Arena.

The 30-year-old was ecstatic after victory put him back above Andy Murray into third spot in the men’s rankings. “It was the strongest finish to a season I’ve ever had in my career,” he said after also lifting titles in Basel and Paris this autumn.

The Swiss star will take a 17-match winning streak into the new year as talk of impending retirement will surely die down. Having gone without Grand Slam glory in 2011, his first barren year since 2002, Federer is 6/5 (SkyBet) to win one of the four in 2012. The six-time Wimbledon champion is 5/1 (Betfred) to add to that tally next summer and 200/1 (WilliamHill) to win all four majors in the next 12 months.
