York Tips: Mubtaghaa

Couldn’t keep pace with Ivawood at Newmarket but that is no disgrace. Placed at Royal Ascot and trainer won the race last year.

The 1.55 York is a valuable juvenile sprint with £125,000 to the winner. Past champions haven’t turned out to be world beaters, it’s all about the here and now with a big pot to play for.

Mubtaghaa has shown a high level of form this season and despite the prize fund this represents a drop in class.

Last time out he finished eighth in the Group 2 July Stakes, beaten 7.75 lengths by Ivawood. Examining the sectionals he covered the first four furlongs in 47.6s, the same as Ivawood but he couldn’t sustain the strong gallop and folded in the final two furlongs. His finishing speed of 97.7% indicates how much he slowed down at the finish.

On a sharper track and amongst more moderate company he could return to the form he showed when placing at Royal Ascot.

William Haggas won the race last year and Mubtaghaa isn’t necessarily his second string. Silvestre De Sousa is 6-13 when riding for Haggas this year and they are overpriced at 18/1 (Betfred).
