Haydock Tips: Bated Breath

Record with ‘firm’ in the going description is 111221. If a photo finish had gone his way, he’d be the defending champion.

The Betfred Sprint Cup (3.25 Haydock) could be the race where Bated Breath gets his Group 1 victory. The key to this horse is fast ground and he’s finally got his conditions.

When racing in the UK on ground with ‘firm’ in the description his record is: 111221. His two defeats came at the hands of Dream Ahead, including by a nose in last year’s Sprint Cup.  If it wasn’t for him, Bated Breath would be unbeaten on the ground and have two Group 1s to his name.

The danger horse is of course Ortensia but I’m yet to be 100% convinced by her. She has twice beaten Spirit Quartz on her way to victory but is yet to record what I would class as a genuine Group 1 speed rating.

This will also be her 6th race of the year, in a campaign that started back in March. There is a danger that the well eventually runs dry and this might be one race too many.

On genuine good to firm ground, we can see what Bated Breath is capable of, making him the value at 7/2 (Betfred).
