WGC Cadillac Golf Tip: Phil Mickelson

Winner in 2009, the 18/1 on offer is too big for arguably one of the best golfers on the planet.

We have an excellent field to enjoy at the Cadillac World Golf Championships this week. All of the world’s top 50 players are scheduled to play at the wonderfully titled TPC Blue Monster at Doral.

Scary though the title is, the course is generally ripped apart by the pros. Expect plenty of low scoring, the average winning total over the last three years has been -18. To win at Doral you need to make birdies.

Americans dominate the field, with 24 entrants. They should know the course as it has been on the PGA Tour in one way or another for the last 50 years.

My first selection is an American well accustomed to peppering the pins - Phil Mickelson. Although without a win this season, he has been giving himself chances to go low. Mickelson ranks fourth in the PGA Tour for birdies, averaging 4.69 per round.

Doral is a course that has been kind to Mickelson, in the last four years T-23 has been his worst finish. He also won here in 2009. With European golfers making the headlines, Mickelson is rather the forgotten man. Two top ten finishes already this year suggest it isn’t quite time to throw him out with Tiger and the trash.

With the Masters round the corner, now is the time he schedules his game to peak. The 18/1 on such a classy performer should be snapped up.

My second golf tip is more of a leftfield selection but not without hope. For the full write up click here.
