US Masters Profiles: Rory McIlroy
Almost twice the price he was arriving last year, and may have found his game just in time.
Age: 23
World Ranking: 2
Major Wins: 2
Augusta Record: A T20 on debut in 2009 was followed by a missed cut in 2010. The record book shows a T15 for last year but never has a statistic so singularly failed to tell the whole story. Led from the start until a meltdown on the Sunday back-nine. Last year he struggled at the weekend again after a strong start.
Form: The start of 2013 saw something resembling a meltdown as the Irishman struggled with new equipment, poor judgment and just plain bad golf by his standards. But a 2nd place finish in Texas last week was a massive improvement.
Verdict: If this tournament was beginning a month ago then McIlroy would have surely had no chance. But his decision to play in Texas at the last minute paid dividends so he can arrive with genuine hope. The reigning US PGA champion now only needs a Green Jacket to make it a sweep of all the American majors.
