St. Jude Classic Golf Tips: Jerry Kelly

Jerry Kelly

Ranks 5th on tour for driving accuracy and can take inspiration from his friend Steve Stricker winning last week.

After Steve Stricker proved that age isn’t a barrier to success I’m going for experience again with Jerry Kelly. Another players who has improved with time, Kelly has posted seven top-3 finishes in the last five years and visited the winners’ enclosure in 2009. In summary he isn’t a player on the wane, he is a worthy competitor.

This season has been inconsistent; in 14 events there have been seven missed cuts but also two tops tens. Ranking a lowly 172 for driving distance there are just some courses beyond his reach – fortunately TPC Southwind isn’t one of them.

The good news is that Jerry Kelly still retains his biggest quality - he hits the ball straight. He ranks 5th for driving accuracy. Although recent course form is thin on the ground, he did enjoy a good start in 2009, going five under par after two rounds. The weekend saw him drop back into the pack but there was enough encouragement to suggest he could go well at this track.

At odds of 150/1 we are well rewarded for the risk and a small each way play at ¼ odds for a top five finish is recommended.
