Malaysian Open Update: Round 1

Rory McIlroy Bounces Back

Rory McIlroy is 8/1 to bounce back with a win at the Malaysian Open. An opening round of 69 left him five shots behind early leader Alexander Noren.

Swede Alexander Noren leads the Malaysian Open after an opening eight-under 64. A 66/1 chance at the start of the tournament he now heads the betting at 7/1. Two shots behind him is teenager Matteo Manassero after a six-under 66. The Italian hot shot turns 18 next week and is 15/2 to celebrate with a victory.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy started to put his Masters’ disappointment behind him with a solid opening 69 to move him to 8/1. One shot behind him is world number one Martin Kaymer, whose round included four birdies and two dropped shots.

It wasn’t such a good day for the newest major winner, Charl Schwartzel. His early tee off meant he was unable to practice with his clubs as they had been lost in transit. A one-over round of 73 leaves the South African with work to do. When asked if he could take any positives from his round, Schwartzel added, “The fact I didn’t fall asleep.” The bookmakers can rest easy and have pushed him out to 50/1 for the tournament.
