CIMB Classic Golf Tips: William McGirt

Enjoying a fine second half of the year and one of the better putters in the field.

A sizeable cheque was probably dangled in front of Tiger Woods to ensure his presence at the CIMB Classic, unfortunately the funds don’t seem to have stretched beyond the former world number one.

Sixth in the betting we have Jeff Overton at 28/1; a player who is yet to win on the PGA Tour in 189 attempts. That tells us all we need to know about the strength in depth. Therefore, I’m taking a chance on William McGirt featuring on the leaderboard at 100/1 (Betfred).

The 33-year-old from North Carolina has enjoyed a strong second half to the season, comfortably earning enough money to secure his card for 2013. The True South Classic in July marked a turn around in fortunes with a T5 and he swiftly followed up with a T2 in the Canadian Open.

He;‘s carried that form into some of the bigger events with a T10 at the Barclays and a T26 at the Deutsche Bank, suggesting he won’t be overawed by this week’s field.

Not one of the longest hitters on tour, the relatively short course at the Mines Resort should suit his game.  Ranked 46th for strokes gained putting, the flat stick is McGirt’s biggest weapon. At 100/1 (Betfred) he provides each-way value with ¼ odds for a top-4 finish.
