Golf Outsider: The Open Championship

There is often value found going against the crowd. Our longshots expert highlights three players at massive prices.

As with most majors there is plenty of strength in depth and often the value is found further down the field. We take a look at three longshots who could make an impact at Muirfield this week.

When Bubba Watson won the Masters many expected him to go on and win several majors, if that is the case then why is he 110/1! It’s not like he’s had a terrible season. He’s finished inside the top-20 in half the tournaments he’s played and is ranked 16th in the world.

With his ability to shape shots and the option to take irons off the tee, there is no reason why he cannot win an Open.

Jonas Blixt makes his major debut this week but the young Swede is a rapidly improving player. He won the Greenbrier Classic at the start of the month, his second win on the PGA Tour and was runner-up at the Nordea Masters in a rare European start. A terrific putter, he could take to links golf quite quickly.

In the last couple of years Marcel Siem has made the jump from a good European player to one of the best on tour. The 32-year-old has won twice in the last 12 months and finished an encouraging T10 at the Scottish Open last week. Having missed one cut all season, the German arrives at Muirfield full of confidence.
