British Open Profile: Phil Mickelson

Mickelson's arrives off victory in the Scottish Open

A multiple major winner but has rarely faired too well on his trips to the UK. 2011 was a highlight though.

Open Record:

Undeniably one of the best players of the past 15 years, ‘Leftie’ holds a pretty poor record in the British Open, but he did find a new peak in 2011. The 4-time major winner had never finished better than his 3rd spot at Troon in 2004 before his Sandwich exploits. The popular American was briefly tied for the lead on the Sunday after a front-nine 30 before fading and finishing T2. Sadly there was another missed cut last year.

Form:

Comes in looking very strong. Victory at the Scottish Open was secured as recently as Sunday so we shouldn’t doubt Mickelson’s appetite for the UK challenge. He finished second at the US Open, for a staggering sixth time, and he was also runner-up at the St Jude Classic just a week before that. But the four-time major winner is no bridesmaid; he has now won 50 tournaments between the PGA and European Tours.

Verdict:

Looks like a real contender, and may be worth a look, at the very least, to be top American at 7/1 (StanJames). He looks like each-way gold after claiming an astounding 34 top-10 finishes in majors. However, a word of caution, only two of those have come in the British Open.
