Reds To Outline Their Top Four Credentials

Mario Balotelli will make his Liverpool debut on Sunday and it could kickstart the Merseysiders' campaign.

One of the most remarkable statistics from last season is that Spurs lost their matches against the top four by a combined score of 27-2 (W0 D1 L7). Indeed, Liverpool won this fixture at White Hart Lane 5-0 and followed that with a 4-0 hammering at Anfield.

Tottenham fans may feel that Mauricio Pochettino has improved things overnight, and that Liverpool have dropped their standards considerably, but I think this could be a classic case of reading the situation incorrectly based on two misleading results last week.

Spurs thumped QPR 4-0 but the Hoops were truly awful and made the hosts look like world-beaters. At the same time, the Reds were soundingly beaten 3-1 at the Etihad but there is no shame in that. It was perhaps the easiest game of the season for the Lilywhites, but the toughest for the Merseysiders.

What Sunday may show is that Liverpool remain a devastating threat on the counter-attack, and this can work particularly well away from home. They have scored on their travels 15 times in a row.

At the same, Brendan Rodgers’ boys have conceded in eight consecutive league outings. This tells me that backing Liverpool to win but with both teams to score looks like the right play - a 7/2 shot with StanJames.
