Rooney's Return

The England captain is as streaky as they come. But now he's back in business, we should adjust our expectations.

If there are two things we should know about Wayne Rooney it’s that he’s a streaky goalscorer and he’s a big match player. Both factors make him a good bet at 12/5 to score anytime at Anfield.

England’s record goalscorer has had a troubling campaign after failing to find the net in the Premier League from 17 October till 2 January. However, true to form, he is now on a run of four goals in three outings across all competitions.

That long league goal drought was also misleading because as we can see Rooney has been scoring plenty in other competitions for his club and for his country:

2014-15 Man Utd Cups & Europe: Played 9 - Goals 7
2014 England: Played 13 - Goals 8
2015 England: Played 8 - Goals 5
Total: Played 30 - Goals 20

Anybody who watched his man of the match performance at Newcastle in midweek will acknowledge that the United captain has his confidence back and that makes all the difference.

Rooney has dry spells in almost every season but once he gets on a roll he’s hard to stop. A Liverpool defence which has conceded five goals in its last two matches will struggle to contain him.
