Newcastle v Man Utd Tip

Rooney has making up to do with his manager

The Red Devils are always at their most dangerous right after an embarrassing result. Expect a response worthy of champions.

Sir Alex Ferguson has a default setting when things go wrong; he will do everything neccessary to ensure the next performance is exemplary in terms of professionalism. He was furious with his team’s performance in losing 3-2 to bottom of the table Blackburn on New Year’s Eve - Newcastle must now expect a backlash.

Wayne Rooney should return after being disciplined for a poor performance in training last week. The England striker reportedly fell short of the expected standards, along with Jonny Evans and Darren Gibson, after the trio had enjoyed a night out together.

After a disastrous defensive display, the Man Utd backlash will most probably take the form of a win with a clean sheet. When the champions suffered their last significant setback in the league, the 6-1 humbling by neighbours City, a 1-0 win at Everton swiftly followed. The next two domestic outings were also victories by the same scoreline.

Rio Ferdinand and Chris Smalling may both be available to return to the Red Devils’ starting line-up in the north-east, which will help their cause. The Magpies have problems of their own after a run of one win in the last eight. The ‘goals against’ column is suddenly taking some punishment with three more flying in for Liverpool in the last match at Anfield.

It’s tempting to go for the time-honoured 1-0 Man Utd win at best odds of 13/2 (Ladbrokes). That may well be worth a small saver, but actually I think 2-0 is the most likely, and at better odds - 15/2 with Coral. The champions have scored 12 in their last three outings and will be determined to make a statement.
