Italy have never lost in eight tournament matches against Germany but the best match bet here is for defences on top.
Despite it all going wrong when we backed ‘no goalscorer’ in Poland v Portugal, we can go in again with conviction and the same bet for the showpiece quarter-final of Euro 2016. It’s 6/1 (WilliamHill) that it remains 0-0 (allowing for own goals) over 90 minutes.
Germany have become the first team to keep clean sheets in each of their first four European Championship matches.
But Italy have impressed just as much at the back. A solitary goal conceded against Ireland came when all their famed defenders were being rested.
There are further reasons to back against goals. Thomas Muller is having a tournament to forget while Daniele De Rossi could prove a costly miss for the Azzurri if he fails a late fitness test.
Above all, the difficulty and significance of the occasion seems destined to result in caginess so long as it’s level.
